Upper West Side

Its relaxed atmosphere, and its artistic livelihood.

Welcome to the Upper West Side

An intellectual, culturally-rich neighborhood teeming with real estate opportunities

The Upper West Side rests between Riverside Park and Central Park and spans from 59th Street all the way up to 125th. It has been one of the most sought-after places to live in New York City since the 1960s for its close proximity to the Hudson River, its relaxed atmosphere, and its artistic livelihood.

Many people choose to live in the Upper West Side because of the high quality of life; the neighborhood is easily navigable, and you’ll have everything you need at your fingertips. There is a diverse offering of live music, performance arts, culinary feats, and artistic enterprises found on this side of Central Park.

The Upper West Side also sports a strong sense of community. You can walk down the street and often recognize neighbors, local shop-owners, and friends — a rarity in a borough as bustling as Manhattan.

What to Love

  • Cultured and intellectual residents
  • Historic architecture and leafy streets
  • Quieter streets, ideal for raising a family

Local Lifestyle

Spanning such a large portion of New York means that the Upper West Side has residents from a variety of backgrounds and lifestyles — walking alongside each other on the busy streets are Wall Street brokers, Broadway stars, and professors at Columbia University. This mixture of residents proves to be an excellent environment for everyone and offers a more laid-back atmosphere than the Upper East Side. There is no shortage of elegant pre-war buildings, including some of the city’s most prestigious residences such as The San Remo, The Dakota, and The Majestic. Designed by the likes of Emery Roth, these buildings often feature Art Deco and Beaux-Arts styling, with elaborate ornaments, dormers, and cornices.

Dining, Entertainment & Shopping

On the Upper West Side, you can find any cuisine at almost any time of day. Barney Greengrass has been a neighborhood tradition since it was established in 1908. The iconic deli is best known for its smoked fish and bagels and is always packed with hungry customers. Jacob’s Pickles offers southern-inspired comfort food, such as fried chicken, biscuits, and homemade pickles. The Ribbon or The Smith are great local spots for watching Sunday football or getting a meal with family or friends and both serve up an excellent happy hour. But any local will tell you that if you want an impressive spot for a truly luxurious dinner, there is no other than Jean-Georges with its floor-to-ceiling windows overlooking Central Park and upscale French menu. Another iconic spot right in the park is Tavern On The Green and is a popular Christmas-time locale or brunch spot for the A-listers.

The shopping selections are equally as robust. Browse Columbus Avenue, where you’ll find apparel retailers like Zara, Madewell, and Rag & Bone among others. This neighborhood has everything you need to stay on the leading edge of new trends.

Things to Do

During the warmer months, Summer On The Hudson the city congregates at Riverside Park to soak in live music. World-famous Lincoln Center for the Performing Arts features all kinds of performances, including dance, theater, music, opera, family-friendly programs, and festivals. Lincoln Center is also home to the New York City Ballet, the Metropolitan Opera, and the New York Philharmonic

The American Museum of Natural History is one of the most distinguished scientific and educational institutions in the world. There is so much to do at the museum that you’d be lucky to live near it. Shows at the Hayden Planetarium Space Theater never get boring, and many of the exhibits rotate so that you can always discover something new. The Guggenheim Museum and Metropolitan Museum of Art are two of the most important art museums in New York City and they continuously rotate their exhibits.
